You’ve spent hours perfecting your website. The design is sleek, the copy is sharp, and your services are top-tier. But there’s a problem: when you search for your business on Google, the link looks… messy.
Maybe the title is cut off halfway through a sentence, or the description ends with an awkward “…” right before the most important part.
In the world of SEO, first impressions happen on the Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP) before a user even clicks your link. If your SEO titles and meta descriptions aren’t the correct length, you’re essentially leaving money on the table.
Here is why length matters and how to get it right every time.
1. The “Goldilocks” Length: Not Too Long, Not Too Short
Google has a specific amount of horizontal space (measured in pixels, but usually simplified into character counts) to show your site information.
SEO Titles: You should aim for 50–60 characters. If it’s too short, you aren’t using enough keywords to help you rank. If it’s over 60, Google will likely truncate it, cutting off your brand name or your call to action.
Meta Descriptions: These should be between 120–155 characters. This is your “sales pitch.” It doesn’t directly affect your ranking, but it does affect your Click-Through Rate (CTR). Too long, and the user misses the punchline; too short, and you look unprofessional.
2. Which Keywords Should Go Where?
SEO isn’t just about stuffing words into a box; it’s about strategic placement.
In the Title: Place your primary keyword as close to the beginning as possible. For example, if you are a plumber in London, start with “Plumber in London” rather than “Welcome to [Brand Name] – The Best Plumbers.” This tells Google immediately what the page is about.
In the Meta Description: Use secondary/latent keywords and a clear Call to Action (CTA). If your title is about “Web Design for Small Businesses,” your description should mention “affordable website packages,” “SEO-friendly design,” and a finishing touch like “Get a free quote today.”
3. The Best Tools to Manage Your SEO
If you’re using WordPress (which, as you know, I’m a big fan of), you don’t have to guess these lengths. There are fantastic plugins that act as a “traffic light” system for your SEO:
Yoast SEO: Probably the most famous tool out there. It gives you a real-time preview of how your post will look on mobile and desktop.
Rank Math: A great alternative to Yoast that offers deep insights into keyword density and readability.
These tools are great for the “backend” of your site, but what if you want to test how a page looks before you hit publish?
4. Test Before You Post: Use Our Free Previewer
One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make is forgetting to check how their site looks on mobile vs. desktop. A title that looks fine on a laptop might get cut off on an iPhone.
To help you get this perfect, I’ve built a free tool right here on the site. You can type in your titles and descriptions and see exactly how they will appear in Google’s search results in real-time.
